Excellent, one step closer. Looking forward to seeing this distributed, hopefully help fund another project?

The funny thing is, it seems as though there are a few sources who might commit to funding our new project. What gives them the confidence is that since we have already completed a feature, they know we're capable of handling such a task.

They would definitely be less interested if we had no previous track record, so I hope this helps  inspire everyone else to keep moving on their own projects!

I thought I'd post some interesting info I've gained from dealing with distributors these past 6 months, as some of you will be reaching this stage too.

- Get a lawyer/make friends with one/become one - a distributor is going to give you an offer, and you damn well better know how to read it! The main concern here is that since distributors are out to make money, they will do it any way possible- including charging YOU for possible incurred costs. That offer they'll be handing you migh tbe filled with "lawyerspeak", so be prepared!

(If necessary, WALK AWAY from any deal which sounds ALL bad. True, you'll probably get a little screwed on your first deal, but try not to get totally screwed. One example is any contract that wants rights to your movie in perpetuity. That's a bad deal!)

- Get a digital camera (if you don't already have one) and take pictures while you are shooting your movie. Distributors like "stills" in high quality from your movie depicting scenes and characters in full costume. Do NOT just grab screen-shots. Also, don't bother with "behind-the-scenes" stuff, unless it is for your own use.

(By the way, "Key Art" is basically the main art that advertises your movie. The poster or DVD jacket is a perfect example of key art.)

That's the first two points that come to mind. If I think of anything else of importance, I'll post it here as well.

Actually, the opposite (more or less)- we finalized a contract about a week ago with York Entertainment and currently we're filling out paperwork and various legal forms. The deal is about the best we're going to get (we walked away from two others, which would have put us in debt) and as soon as we finish with the deliverables, it's out of our hands.

As far as I can tell, as soon as they are satisfied with everything, they begin their own process and that takes about two months- so I expect this to be available around the end of May, roughly. I'm not sure what form it's going to take- they wanted a pan & scan digital copy, and the movie was shot for widescreen TVs! (They also wanted a stereo-only version, and the movie is encoded in 5.1 surround sound!)

That brings me to another few points worth mentioning...

- Distributors are interested in getting the product out to as wide an audience as possible, so it's a good idea to edit your movie with the dialogue track completely separate. Keep your music and sound effects apart from the dialogue, so when the distributor wants to dub it in a foreign language, you've made the process much easier!

- Also, we had to agree to give the distributor the right to alter the movie. At first we weren't thrilled, but it was explained that some countries might object to various scenes, so a censored product is better than no product. (My producer has spoken to other independent filmmakers and apparently this is standard procedure.) I wonder what they'll cut- the only thing objectionable is a sex scene and it's pretty integral to the story.

So I guess the bottom line is that the wait is almost over!

(I hope these things will be of some use to the rest of you!)

Just a thought on your action adventure film, when I went to the South Dakota Film Festival this past year these guys shot a 1930s gangster film and got a 30s Car Club to help out in dressing up their street scenes with period cars. Maybe you thought of this already, maybe not, but that's what jumped to my mind and I figured I ought to share it.

And keep updating about The Uninvited, still very excited about it
